Two Speakers Added To Healthy Harvest Show’s Retailer Education Program
Two new speakers—retailing consultant Jay Jacobowitz and certified nutritionist Carl Germano—have been added to the free retailer education program that will take place at the upcoming Healthy Harvest Trade Show in Long Beach, CA.
Jacobowitz and Germano join retailing guru Danny Wells among the confirmed speakers for this year’s Healthy Harvest Show, which will be held October 9-11, 2009 at the Long Beach Convention Center, Hall B.
“We are very pleased to offer natural product retailers a dynamic and free educational program that will help them be more competitive in today’s challenging economic environment,” noted Show Manager Holly Johnson.
Johnson pointed out that all health and natural product retailers can attend the Healthy Harvest Show as well as the education program for free. To register, visit the official show website at:

The Future of Retailing
Renowned natural products industry consultant and educator Jay Jacobowitz, president of Retail Insights (Brattleboro, VT), will present a brand new seminar at this year’s Healthy Harvest Show. The title of his workshop is “The Future of Natural Products Retailing.”
According to Jacobowitz, this seminar will explore how independent natural products retailers can “capture the imaginations of non-core natural shoppers who are driving industry growth.”
He went on to explain that the number of “core” natural product industry shoppers is diminishing over time. “They just aren’t making ‘core’ natural shoppers any more,” said Jacobowitz. “The youngest core natural shopper is 44 years old—the last of the Baby Boom counterculture revolution of the 1960s. This seminar will help independent retailers make their stores relevant to the next generation of shoppers.”
“The Future of Retailing” seminar by Jay Jacobowitz takes place on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 10:00 a.m.
Personalized Nutrition
Carl Germano, a registered, certified nutritionist, best-selling author and product formulator, will offer a discussion about “Personalized Nutrition” on Saturday, October 10 at 10:00 a.m. Germano’s presentation will in part be based on research into biochemical individuality performed by the renowned biochemist Roger Williams, PhD.
As Germano noted, nutritional science at present is moving to personalized nutrition, which addresses gender, age, diet and lifestyle differences. As part of this discussion, Germano will cover a myriad of novel ingredients and formulations addressing the needs of children, women, men, Baby Boomers, vegetarians and active lifestyle enthusiasts. Germano’s appearance is being sponsored by Bluebonnet Nutrition.

Wells to Present ‘Recession-Proof Retailing’ at Healthy Harvest Show
Natural products retailing guru Danny Wells will present two timely (and free) educational lectures—including a brand new seminar entitled “Recession-Proof Retailing: Achieving Double-Digit Growth in a Down Economy”—during the Healthy Harvest Retailer Trade Show in Long Beach, CA this fall, show organizers have announced.
The Healthy Harvest Show will take place October 9-11, 2009, at the Long Beach Convention Center, conveniently located just south of Los Angeles. The free education program will run during all three days of the Healthy Harvest Show, while the trade show floor will be open on Saturday and Sunday.
“We are very pleased to offer our show’s retailer attendees this very valuable and timely lecture by one of the industry’s leading retailer educators,” said Daniel McSweeney, president and show organizer, TLC Tradeshow Productions, Ojai, CA. “In light of the nationwide recession, it is imperative that natural product retailers take the necessary steps to maximize sales and profitability in order to survive the current economic crisis.”
Among the key objectives retailers will learn at the Recession-Proof Retailing seminar are:
• Positioning your store to adapt to the natural consumers’ changed shopping behavior.
• Pricing strategies to deliver value in a suppressed economy while maintaining margins.
• Low cost and no cost marketing plans for tough times.
• An in-store promotional secret that results in 33 percent. of customers buying a new product.
• Key action items that are guaranteed to lower operating expenses and increase profits.
• Steps to take during a recession to ensure explosive growth during the recovery.
According to Wells, “During this time of re-evaluation and adjustment, consumers are redefining shopping patterns and product choices. Savvy retailers will capitalize on those departments which are growing in this economy … and they will be lowering inventories and department size in others.
“Top financial advisors are predicting the redefining of this economy to be a three- or four-year process,” added Wells. “The good news for natural products retailers is that several key steps taken today can guarantee a surviving and thriving business. These action items will be outlined in my keynote address ‘Recession-Proof Retailing’ at the Healthy Harvest Show in Long Beach.”
In addition to the “Recession-Proof Retailing” lecture at the Healthy Harvest Show, Wells will present another free educational seminar entitled “Capitalizing on Market Trends.” In this lecture, Wells will discuss the most recent sales data within the industry and how best to position your store to capitalize on these trends.
Danny Wells, president of Danny Wells & Associates, is a natural products industry icon of over 45 years. He has worked with more than 1,000 retail and supply clients, authored more than 250 published articles, and has lectured to over 13,000 natural product industry members.

West Coast Enjoys Successful Healthy Harvest Show
The fourth annual Healthy Harvest Show—touted as the West Coast’s leading regional trade show for the health and natural products industry—recently attracted some 600 attendees to the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, CA. The Southern California trade show took place September 26-28, 2008.
Retailers and other attendees of the three-day event came to see and purchase products from the show’s 113 exhibitors, while also enjoying a free educational program featuring well-known health experts and authors.
According to TLC Tradeshow Productions of Ojai, CA, owner and producer of the Healthy Harvest Show, the event was successful in its primary goal of bringing retailers and manufacturers together in an intimate setting that is conducive to relationship-building and product education.
“The Healthy Harvest Show was a weekend full of interesting education and products. People passionate about the natural products industry came together to grow their businesses in a relaxed, fun atmosphere,” noted show manager Ann Tisserand. “I was happy to have the opportunity to meet and work with many retailers and manufacturers of integrity and innovation. We’re now very excited to work toward an even bigger and better show next year where more participants will experience the inspiration of the personal atmosphere at the Healthy Harvest Show.”

Show and Sell!
The exhibit hall of the Healthy Harvest Show represented a diverse cross-section of the natural and organic products industry, with many well-known brands like Solgar, Nature’s Way, Nature’s Plus, Bluebonnet Nutrition, Natural Factors and Wakunaga showing alongside several new companies and first-time exhibitors—providing retailers with plenty to see and taste on the show floor.
“There is so much diversity in the products offered by the exhibitors,” commented Chloe Lunn of Devil’s Co. in San Diego, CA. Added her colleague Max Belar, “The show is especially great for us because we’re just starting out and we can learn a lot about the industry.”
The Healthy Harvest Show was a great opportunity to discover new products, several retailer attendees commented. “So many of the manufacturers have new products at their booths, and we’ve placed many orders,” noted Ron Dudley of A to Zinc Nutrition, who made his way out to Long Beach from his Hudson, FL store.
Retailers also said they appreciated the face-to-face value, intimate setting and relaxed atmosphere offered at the Healthy Harvest Show. “There are certainly a lot of products here that I don’t get to see through mail or email,” explained Serena His of The Tao of Wellness in Augora Hills, CA.
“The show was great,” said Sean Eagan, owner of Supplement Basics in Livermore, CA. “It is a way to find out what’s new on the market, make new contacts and friends in the industry, and learn from other successful retailers ideas to find ways to grow my business!”
Many exhibitors also said they enjoyed the smaller, more personal atmosphere of the Healthy Harvest Show.
“What I really like about the show is that I get to spend a lot of quality time building relationships with customers,” explained exhibitor Brian Taschereau of Highland Laboratories (Mt. Angel, OR), who emphasized Healthy Harvest as a great forum for forming personal connections with clients.
“We have taken orders, we educated people and we had a great seminar. Everything just came together for us this weekend,” noted Terry Lemerond of Europharma (Green Bay, WI). “We’re here to provide a great service to our customers, and it’s nice to talk to them and meet them personally. You don’t do that from the back of your office or over a phone. This is a great show for that.”
“The experience at the Healthy Harvest Show for our company was positive and healthy,” commented Chris Herbert of North American Herb & Spice (Buffalo Grove, IL). “We were able to make great contacts with key accounts on the West Coast, which will contribute to a strong relationship between us and the retailer. Also, we received good orders, met great people and will continue to support the Healthy Harvest Show! Thanks again to all the retailers who attended!”
Networking continued throughout the weekend, including Saturday night at the Retailer Appreciation Reception held at the Long Beach Hilton. The reception was jointly sponsored by Nature’s Best and Martec Industries.
“I’m sure my contacts developed here and the knowledge I’ve gained will take my business to the next level,” concluded retailer Marcus Barber of Vitamin Boutique, Kileen, TX. “I look forward to coming back next year.”
Knowledge is Power
Perhaps one of the most successful aspects of this year’s Healthy Harvest Show was the opportunity for education, which kicked off with the show’s “Fresh Perspectives” education day on Friday, September 26. Dan Bolton, editor of the Natural Food Network, started off the seminars on Friday morning with a panel discussion entitled “Promoting Healthy Foods,” featuring personal anecdotes and professional advice for effectively promoting health and wellness in a retail setting. “Success With Supplements,” a retailer panel moderated by Kate Quackenbush, editor-in-chief of Vitamin Retailer, continued the motif of discussion with a conversation on the “dos and don’ts” of supplement marketing.
Laura Lewis, author of 52 Ways to a Healthy You, conducted a high-energy keynote address on Friday, covering topics from enhancing one’s love life to slowing the aging process, and her popularity was evidenced by the amount of attendees who stopped by the Healthy Harvest booth to receive a signed copy of her book.
Retailing expert Jay Jacobowitz of Retail Insights conducted a well-attended seminar about business models, while Bill Crawford of New Hope Communications led a discussion on pricing and discount strategies. Rounding out Friday’s “Education Day” sessions was Tracy Ramos of USB Financial Services, who presented information about business and personal retirement plans.
Other speakers who appeared throughout the weekend included Dr. Carolyn Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle, who discussed the prevalence of magnesium deficiency in America; physician and industry consultant Mark Kaylor, who spoke about nutrients for brain health; and Europharma’s Terry Lemerond, who educated retailers on the topic of natural pain relief.
Wrapping up the show’s lineup of speakers were Dr. Tim Chapman, who discussed nutrients for skin health; Dr. Cass Ingram, author of Eat Right For Your Metabolic Type; and retailers Tom Sokoloff and David Stouder, who led a lively presentation about hosting a radio show.
“The seminars were enlightening and encouraging,” remarked Dalton Zeiszler of New Way Health (Beulah, ND). “Dr. Dean, in particular, was very good. It was so exciting I wanted to do cartwheels!”
Attendees were also impressed with the accessibility and applicability of the topics. “Mr. Lemerond was very
informative and used a language we could understand,” said Bill Workman, owner of Herbie’s in Whittier, CA. Gracie Workman, his wife and co-owner, also emphasized, “I don’t like it when speakers use such scientific language and it goes right over my head. He was very clear.”
“The classes were good,” commented Brenda Davis of The Apple Crate (Fayetville, NC). “We really had a great time at the show. I like the smaller venue. It felt more relaxed and I was able to make some good contacts that I normally may not have had a chance to talk to for as long as I did.”
